Before you Travel to Mexico

  • Do NOT travel if you were exposed to COVID-19, you are sick, or you have tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Since November 2021 the land border between the United States and Mexico has been open to both essential and non-essential travel, with the caveat that non-essential travelers must show proof that they have been fully vaccinated. Starting in January 2022, both essential and non-essential travelers crossing the land border into the United States will be required to show proof that they have been fully vaccinated.
  • Travelers to Mexico are not required to self-quarantine upon arrival or provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test for entry to Mexico.
  • Passengers who show symptoms of COVID-19 may be subject to additional health screenings.

Can you Fly to Mexico Right Now?

There are several flights departing daily from the United States and Canada to Mexico. The airports and airlines have introduced increased safety protocols. Face masks must be worn both in the airports and on airplanes. Most planes have surgical grade air filters, which clean the air inside the plane to prevent the virus from spreading.

Are Hotels Open in Mexico?

Yes, hotels and resorts in Mexico have been open since July 1st, 2020. The Mexican government introduced a biweekly traffic light monitoring system to indicate the level of the pandemic, percentage of infections, and restrictions in each state. The stoplight system has four colors: red, orange, yellow, and green. Red indicates that the destination can only offer essential activities and hotel occupancy is capped at 25% and green means that all activities are permitted while taking appropriate precautions.

For the period December 13 to 26, 2021, 27 out of 32 Mexican states are green, according to the stoplight system. Five states are yellow: Baja California (the northern part of the peninsula), Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Sonora, and zero states are orange or red.

The state of Quintana Roo has been divided into two regions in the stoplight system for most of the pandemic – Southern Quintana Roo and Northern Quintana Roo. Both regions are currently in green status according to the latest update as of December 13, 2021. Green status means that economic and social activities have resumed as normal, schools are open and operating under the “new normal” model, and face masks are recommended in closed public spaces and mandatory in public transport.
