Mexico’s Independence in a Nutshell
By 1810, what is now known as Mexico had been under Spanish rule for nearly three centuries since 1521. No doubt influenced by the Declaration of Independence in the United States and the French Revolution, discontent against Spanish domination came to boiling point around the turn of the nineteenth century.

The start of Mexican Independence is attributed to priest Miguel Hidalgo and captains Ignacio Allende and Juan Aldama who incited the population of the town of Dolores to rise against the Viceroyalty of New Spain, shouting: “¡Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe! ¡Abajo el mal gobierno! ¡Viva Fernando VII!” (Long live the Virgin of Guadalupe! Down with the bad government! Long live Fernando VII!) This event took place in the morning on September 16, 1810 and is known today as the “Grito de Dolores” (Shout of Dolores) and is considered to be the beginning of the process that would lead to Mexico’s Independence.

However, Mexico was only officially recognized by the rest of the world as an independent new state in 1821, 11 years after the Dolores uprising, when the Declaration of Independence was signed and the Trigarante Army headed by Agustin Iturbide and Vicente Guerrero marched into Mexico City marking the end of the struggle for independence.
