Top Tips to Save Money on your Cancun VacationGoing to Cancun, Mexico on vacation need not break the bank and there are many ways to save money in the Caribbean paradise, making it possible to return more frequently to enjoy the wonderful sunshine and stunning beaches.

All-Inclusive or European Plan?

One of the ways to save money on a Cancun vacation is to choose the right hotel package for you. If you are going to spend most of your time on the resort, then an all-inclusive package can save you money on eating out in expensive restaurants as well as taxi fares to and from the restaurants. Families will find all-inclusive offers particularly attractive as many resort, like Villa del Palmar Cancun, have packages that include two children under 12 for free, saving you money on kids’ meals.

On the other hand, if you are likely to be hanging out in Cancun’s hotel zone and taking regular excursions, a room only or European plan could be a more economical choice as you may not be able to take full advantage of the all-inclusive perks. Suites with kitchens can also be a great option for preparing packed lunches and eating breakfast in your suite to save money.

Book Off-Season

Reserving hotels, airplane tickets and excursions will be cheaper during the low season, and you may find you get more for your money. If you are not limited by which times of year you travel, then staying in Cancun from May through October could make you great savings in comparison to peak seasons. Summer in Cancun is hot and humid with the possibility of hurricanes between July and October but the beaches are less busy and you will have a wonderful time enjoying all that Cancun has to offer.

Airport Transfers

Another tip to save money is to book the airport transfer to your hotel before you arrive at Cancun’s international airport. Many hotels offer airport pick-ups for a reasonable fee which usually works out cheaper than taking a taxi from the airport. Remember, with all you bags and cases, a standard taxi will not always be big enough.

Getting Around

For adventure seekers, taking the bus rather than a taxi can save you quite a few dollars. The local bus service is pretty frequent and reliable and will cost you under a dollar to get to where you want to go. Guests at Villa del Palmar can also benefit from a shuttle bus into town and to a large shopping mall. If you have a large family and want to spend a lot of time out and about to see the sights, renting a car for a day or two might be more economical than taxis or organized tours (although a tour generally works out cheaper for couples).

Shopping

You can make great savings on your souvenirs if you buy them in the right place and know how to haggle. Cancun has a couple of flea markets with the cheapest being Mercado 28 in the downtown area; there is also one in the hotel zone, although gifts are more expensive there. Buying from sellers on the beach is also an option, just be clear about how much you are willing to pay.

Pesos or Dollars?

Cancun is very dollar friendly and most tourists can spend their whole time in Cancun spending nothing but dollars (although your change is often given in pesos). However, it works out slightly cheaper for you to spend pesos as frequently sellers will choose an exchange rate in their favor. It might only seem like a few cents at a time, but they quickly add up the more dollars you spend.
