El Dia del Niño in Mexico (Children’s Day)

One way to keep your children, grandchildren, and yourself happy is by creating new memories, making new friends, and going on adventures during your annual vacations. One place to do just that is in Mexico. What you might not know is that April in Mexico is the month that celebrates children of all ages with a national holiday: El Dia del Nino, otherwise known as Children’s Day.

The History of El Día del Niño

The Mexican national holiday that celebrates children is celebrated on April 30th each year. El Día del Niño first started in the early 1920’s, way before the United Nations suggested that countries adopt a National Children’s Day in honour of the Children’s Rights Declaration of 1959. Most countries worldwide went on to chose their own date to celebrate, while Mexico kept April 30th as its chosen date to commemorate the day in 1924 when Mexico’s President, Alvaro Obregon and Jose Vasconcelos, the Public Education Minister, signed the Children’s Rights Declaration proposed by the United Nation’s precursor, the League of Nations in 1924. Thus from 1925, El dia del nino was celebrated on the last day of April each year in Mexico.

On April 30th, nearly all the children in Mexico will enjoy celebrations at home and at school and their family members will furnish them with gifts. Schools are open as usual on this day in Mexico but younger students will get to enjoy exciting activities, treats, and parties. Children’s charities will also make an extra pledge at this time of year to raise funds for less fortunate children and young people.
