As the world begins to get back to a new type of normal after months of social distancing, quarantining, and investing in tubs of hand sanitizer and wipes, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has designed the world’s first ever global safety and hygiene stamp. This Safe Travels stamp will help travelers identify which businesses and destinations around the world have adopted its standardized global health and hygiene measures. Since the stamp was launched, Mexican destinations Baja California Sur, Cancun & Puerto Vallarta have been given WTTC’s stamp of approval.

The special Safe Travels stamp was created by the WTTC to help travelers have confidence in the destinations they choose to travel to. It ensures that restaurants, private sectors, and other businesses around the world have adopted standardized health and hygiene protocols. The goal is to offer tourists a positive holiday experience following the pandemic and to have ‘safe travels’, knowing that the destination they have chosen is exercising rigorous health measures to prioritize traveler safety.

The protocols and hygiene standards applied by the Safe Travels stamp were devised following the experience that WTTC had dealing with COVID-19 and following health and safety guidelines provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The protocols given by the Safe Travels stamp provide a coordinated approach and guidelines that companies and travelers can use to approach the ‘new normal’ of the COVID-19 world, including protocols on hygiene, deep cleaning, health, and social distancing.

In a statement, Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO, said: “The stamp is vital to re-establish worldwide consumer confidence in Travel & Tourism and so travelers can be sure that enhanced standards of hygiene are in place for them to be able to travel safely.” She added “It will, in turn, help the Travel & Tourism sector to reopen for business.” The stamp is also being supported by The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) who have embraced the WTTC Safe Travels stamp. Since the Safe Travels stamp was launched, several destinations including Baja California Sur, Yucatan, and Riviera Nayarit have implemented WTTC’s new health and safety guidelines.

The Safe Travels stamp is a positive step forward in helping the wheels of the travel and tourism industry turn again. According to WTTC’s 2020 Economic Impact Report, in 2019, Travel & Tourism was responsible for 1 in 10 jobs (330 million total), making a 10.3% contribution to global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and generating one in four of all new jobs.

We are thrilled that in Mexico, popular tourist destinations such as Baja California Sur, Yucatan, and Riviera Nayarit have all received the Safe Travels stamp. This means that Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and the cities that form Los Cabos will be exercising the rigorous health and safety protocols provided by the WTTC and have made safe tourism their top priority.

In an interview, Carlos Mendoza Davis, Governor of the State of Baja California Sur, said “It is an honor to have our state included in the list of destinations using the Safe Travels stamp; we are hugely supportive of the global protocols as the health and safety of our traveler’s is our priority. The tourism destinations within our state are ready to receive traveler’s with open arms and to contribute to the reactivation of the sector in the country.”

The Governor of Yucatan, Mauricio Vila, said: “Yucatan is an example when it comes to security and best practices, we are now looking to become that example in terms of biosecurity for tourism. We are delighted to be recognized with the Safe Travels stamp from WTTC.”

Jesus Carmona Jimenez, president of the Banderas Bay Hotel and Motel Association, said that “Riviera Nayarit has always strived to raise the bar as it relates to best practices in tourism and sustainability. Today, this has become more important than ever before as we prepare to reopen and welcome back travelers from around the globe.”

We anticipate your visit and look forward to creating more fond memories with you!
