A few gifts will be exchanged at this time, but nothing like in the UK, Canada, and the United States. The importance for families in Mexico is to spend time together.

The Three Kings / Three Wise Men

Another tradition you can expect to see if your spend your winter vacations in Mexico is the feast of Los Tres Magos or the Three Kings, which occurs on January 6th. This is the time when children are traditionally given their Christmas gifts. This celebration is to honor the journey of the three kings that went to see the birth of Jesus.Children put their shoes outside by the door and wait for kings to leave their gifts there.

Rosca de Reyes

Along with giving gifts, in Mexico there is a special treat that is celebrated on the Three Kinds Day, and that is the Rosca de Reyes. The Rosca de Reyes is shaped to resemble a king’s crown. The sweet bread will have a baby Jesus placed inside, then everyone will try to avoid cutting a slice of sweet bread and find the baby Jesus. If you get slice with a the baby inside, this means that you will be hosting the Dia de Candelaria or the Candlemas Day, which occurs on February 2nd. At this celebration, the main dish is tamales for all the guests.
