Can you drink the water in Cancun?
The short answer is that anyone visiting Cancun on vacation is best advised to drink bottled water. Regardless of whether the tap water meets the standards of safety needed to be safe for drinking, a change in water from what you are used to can cause an upset stomachs. So, bottled water is the safest bet. You can be sure the water that comes out of the faucets at Villa del Palmar Cancun has gone through a robust filter system and is technically “safe to drink,” however, you are advised to drink the bottled water that is provided for you in your suite. There is no point risking getting sick on vacation if you can take simple steps to avoid it.
How safe is Cancun’s water?
This all depends on where the faucet is situated. Some of the cities and towns in Mexico, including Cancun, have the best public water system available and the locals are very happy drinking their water straight from the tap, but you should know that not every place is the same and that your stomach may not be accustomed to it.
The water in Mexico is delivered in a variety of ways: mains-feed, local water springs or communal feed and rain collection, or having the water delivered to them by truck. The urban towns and cities including Cancun have their water delivered with mains-feed, but outside of these areas the water is generally supplied from a communally ran system. Some locals will collect rainwater or have trucks deliver water that is placed into a cistern on the property.
Bottle water and on-site filtration systems
Most private hotels and restaurants in Cancun will have an on-site filtration system installed or offer guests drinking water that has been purified or bottled. In Cancun, it isn’t difficult to purchase bottled water as you can find it at pharmacies, supermarkets, street traders, convenience stores, and companies that deliver the water. The bottled water comes in a variety of sizes. There are bottled water that fits perfectly in a hand and the size goes up to a large 20 liter known as a “Garrafon”. The larger size is generally delivered to homes, factories, and offices.
