Table of Contents

It is that cold time of year again, winter time! If you are looking to escape from the chill of winter, Cancun is the perfect destination to visit with an average year-round temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

Picture yourself hitting an amazing sandy beach where you can get a dreamy tan or just kick back and relax sipping your favorite cocktail in the warm weather instead of scraping ice off your windshield.

Top Reasons to Vacation in Winter

Exchanging the winter blues for the turquoise hues of the Mexican Caribbean, sounds like a good idea, right? If you need a bit more convincing, here are a few more reasons why you should take a vacation in winter months:

  • Mood: the reduced level of sunlight in winter causes serotonin levels to drop and has been linked to the onset of seasonal affective disorder. Serotonin is the chemical in our brains responsible for making us feel happy.
  • Health: Vitamin D is vital for our optimal health. The sun provides the energy for vitamin D synthesis to occur. Vitamin D is essential for maintaining strong and healthy bones. Low vitamin D levels have also been linked to depression.
  • Taking a Break is essential to revitalize your spirit, refresh your mind and balance your emotional health. It is always worth finding time for you.

What to Do in Cancun during Winter Vacation

Cancun is a popular tourist destination for sun seekers, especially during winter with plenty of activities to do such as exploring Cancun’s local area, visiting the impressive archaeological sites and landmarks of interest.

To make the most out of your next trip to Cancun in the winter season, at Villa del Palmar Cancún we’ve gathered a few ideas that you can add to your itinerary:

  • Visit the Magical Town of Isla Mujeres:

Isla Mujeres is located just 45 minutes from Villa del Palmar Cancún and it is a great place to get close to local people and experience the culture in southern Mexico. In Isla Mujeres you can visit pristine beaches, go shopping around this picturesque island or sample delicious seafood; the Tikin’xic, a delicately broiled seasoned fish, is a must!

Getting to Isla Mujeres is easy, you just need to head Punta Sam, only 10-minutes by taxi from the resort, buy your tickets for the ferry and you’re ready to go!
  • Play Golf in Cancun

If you are a devoted golfer, Cancun has amazing golf courses open throughout the year, unlike some other destinations where golf courses close during the winter season.

Golf courses in Cancun feature impressive landscapes, framed by the Mexican Caribbean, lagoons and lush nature. Close to Villa del Palmar Cancún, you can arrange your tees at the Playa Mujeres Golf Course, an 18-hole golf course designed by the “White Shark”, Greg Norman.

Some night tours, such as Chichen Itza Light and Sound, are also worth checking out.
  • Go Shopping in Cancun

Cancun is not just about getting the perfect tan or visiting nightclubs, it is also a great destination for shopping! Visit the Outlets and malls in downtown Cancun or the Hotel Zone where you will find premium clothing brands, restaurants and some attractions, including museums, aquariums, and some on-going happenings.
  • Visit the Underwater Museum in Cancun

Due to Cancun’s average temperature of 86 degrees throughout the year, swimming and snorkeling is possible all year round. MUSA (The Underwater Museum of Art) is as its name suggests, an underwater museum located in Isla Mujeres area. MUSA contains over 500 sculptures, which you can view by diving, snorkeling, or taking a ride on the glass bottom boat. The underwater museum features many catching-eye statues, and is a great spot for photos.

  • Visit Playa del Carmen and Cozumel

Playa del Carmen is a well-known city about 50 minutes away from Cancun. We recommend strolling around Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) where you will find many local and artisan shops, restaurants, and bars. If you would like to take a day trip to Cozumel, you can take the ferry from Playa del Carmen’s pier. Cozumel is a great place to shop, eat lunch or go for a swim. We recommend taking a snorkeling tour at El Cielo, a shallow beach that will mesmerize you with its natural beauty and abundant marine life.

  • Visit Tulum

Tulum is not only a well-known archaeological site, but it is also a picturesque town with a beautiful beach area, exquisite restaurants of regional and international specialties. If you want to try authentic homemade food, make sure to visit Don Cafeto.
  • Take a Tour to Holbox Island

Holbox is a small island that is a hidden gem full of natural beauty, gorgeous white sand beaches and very few cars. A tour to Holbox is a one-of-a-kind experience and well worth a visit.

Holbox is home to flamingos and pelicans and is a great spot for bird watching. Other activities to do on the island include: bike riding, lounging on hammocks in the water, kayaking through the mangrove forest and eating delicious lobster pizza and traditional fish ceviche.

  • Take a Tour the Yucatan Area

Visiting the Yucatan is a must if you are keen to learn about the Mayan culture and admire amazing ancient buildings and temples. The Yucatan area is about a 2-hour drive from Cancun and winter is a great time to take a tour to Chichen Itza, enjoy exquisite local food in Valladolid or stroll along the Paseo Montejo in Merida city, where you will find lots of museums. Note that the average temperature in the Yucatan area is colder than the 86 degrees you will find in the Cancun area, so if you are planning a visit there, be sure to bring a light jacket or sweater with you.
