A Birder’s Haven
Nature lovers who want to get away from the bright lights and party scene of Cancun for a while will want to make a visit to Isla Contoy a priority. The island’s bird sanctuary is home to over 150 species of both resident and migratory birds who make full use of the great climate. Plus, being so quiet, bird spotters can hunker down and wait to see some brown pelicans, frigates and double-crested cormorants safe in the knowledge that they are unlikely to be disturbed. Despite being only five miles long, this sanctuary is undoubtedly the most important in the Mexican Caribbean!
Diving and Snorkeling
If you’re really more of a marine wildlife person that a bird lover you can take full advantage of the crystalline and lively waters that are filled with all kinds of marine life. From tropical fish to stingray and even the odd sea turtle (if you’re lucky), the waters here are teeming with life. This is a perfect place to indulge in a spot of snorkelling or diving, or even just for a swim.
